North Bay Akitas

Our Goals

Our goal at North Bay Akitas is to produce the best, healthiest, and most sound puppies we possibly can. This is why we do the necessary steps, by studying the pedigrees, adding the type that will best compliment our type, and having the health checks done before we breed any of our Akitas.

We are not into showing our Akitas so selling a puppy to a show home is not our main goal. Our main goal is selling our Akitas to a nice lovable home where he/she will live and enjoy life with its family and be free from most stressors that can be caused by showing.

We welcome show homes to buy our Akitas but it is not our intention to just sell solely to show homes.  Selling  an Akita puppy to a show home doesn’t necessary mean it will get the love, affection and  attention it should get. All it means is that the puppy will have a championship in front of his/her kennel name and we did not get into Akitas for that reason. A handler once said if a dog isn’t being shown it’s a waste of a good dog.  I totally disagree. If you have an Akita tied up and it never gets attention or is left in a crate for hours at a time, that is what we call a waste of a good dog.

A benefit to newcomers who are interested in showing is that we don’t keep the first pick since we are not a show home. Breeders who also show tend to keep the best puppy of the litter.  It would be foolish for them not to.

Since I’ve owned an Akita at one time or another since 1986 I’ve gotten a chance to meet and get to know Akita breeders that  have influenced the Akita breed and have a lot of knowledge about the Akita breed in both showing and breeding the Akita. When I have concerns or questions I call and/or e-mail the old timers (is what I like to call them) because they have been involved with Akitas longer than most of us. Kennels like Kuroi Kao, Cheered, Toshimi, and Minda Akitas. I have taken my females to Toshimi’s Akitas to be bred when I use to live in Illinois. I have taken our girl Asia to be bred to Georgie at Minda’s Akitas here in California. We purchased our foundation stock from Kuroi Kao and Chereed’s Akitas. I can call and/or e-mail Priscilla and/or Bob McCune DVM, Francee Hamblet, Reed and/or Cher Keffer ( Reed has judged Akitas at shows) with questions at any time. They actually know more than the average veterinarian about the health of the Akita breed.  When Julie Hoehn of Goshen Akitas was still into Akitas she showed me how to pick the best Akita puppy out of a litter.  After all she picked Ch. Goshen’s Chariots O’Fire from O’BJ kennels.

Some show kennels will say “How can you sell a show puppy if you don’t show?” I say “Easy, first you put in the time (years) so you know what it is you want your Akita to look like when he/she matures. Talk to the old timers as often as you can.  They have a wealth of information and knowledge on the Akita breed. Go to as many shows and seminars that you possibly can , join an Akita club, learn the health problems that Akitas are prone to, get to know the blood lines and the health problems that are associated with that blood line, have all the necessary health checks completed before you breed your Akitas and you will be just fine.”

We all know just because an Akita is a champion don’t mean it should be a champion. If you spend enough money and/or have the right handler to show your Akitas, most Akitas can be champions.

We have had show people come to our home and scold us because we don’t show our dogs. The same people said we have some of the best looking Akitas they have ever seen. All of our dogs here at North Bay Akitas can be champions if we were a show home, but we simply choose to give them lots of love, affection and attention and not the stress that comes along with showing.
